    Description

An Ainu bear Japanese wood carving that measures 10.75" long by 9.75" high by 6" wide.  Carved to resemble an old man hunched over resting his hand on a tree stump as he carries a freshly caught salmon on his back, this anthropomorphic design is well known among Ainu carvings.  Carved from one solid piece of wood, the back of the stand has 3 sets of Kanji characters possibly determining its origin and the artist's name. The condition is very good with minor natural surface cracks due to its age from the 1960's.
